Neuropathy or peripheral neuropathy is what happens when the nerves in your body that carry signals from your brain and spinal cord are diseased or damaged. The reason for this damage can range from trauma like what happens in carpal tunnel syndrome or through diseases like diabetes. Cancer medication can also be the reason behind the nerve damage. Depending on the reason and location of the damage, you may experience different symptoms.
There are actually different types of neuropathy, divided along the types of nerves that are affected. The sensory and motor nerves are often classed together, being the nerves that receive sensations and control how your muscles move. The third type of nerves that can be affected by neuropathy are autonomic nerves that control your involuntary functions like heart rate and digestion.
